Locals give the name “mayen” to buildings like this, a self-sufficient core designed to provide shelter and protection to man and his animals in the isolated and unforgiving environment of the Alps.

The structure, using typical local materials, blends naturally into the surrounding landscape. Inside, floors and walls are made of thin slats of solid larch wood and define the space in a wooden extrusion with the structure’s two end walls in plaster. The inner core containing the stairs, bathrooms, wardrobes and kitchen block “floats” as if detached inside this space and is covered in larch treated with iron oxide and finished with wax.
